Hi and welcome to The Balanced Student! I’m Jeannine Jannot, owner and coach. My passion is helping students (and parents!) who feel overwhelmed and stressed-out by today’s high-stakes educational environment. I see students, often high-achieving, who have become almost paralyzed by the academic pressures and their inability to successfully identify what they need to do and how to do it. These students are lacking skills. Many students have been high-achievers most of their lives – completing homework in class or on the bus and not really needing to study while still earning high grades. So, what happens? Rigor. Lots of rigor. As students advance through middle school, high school and even college, there comes a time when the rigor starts to outpace their ability to “wing it” and do well. Typically, these students have not been taught how to manage their time, plan and set goals, study to learn and care for themselves through proper sleep, nutrition and exercise.  As a college instructor, and parent of three, I have seen first-hand the stressors and skill deficits that put many students at risk of falling short of their potential. It is my goal to offer skill development to students starting as early as elementary age, so they can practice and internalize these skills as they begin to navigate the high-stakes rigor of high school and college.

In addition to raising my own three children, I have extensive experience working with children of all ages across a variety of settings. I can quickly build rapport with reluctant, and sometimes resistant, students because I can articulate their struggles and provide hope and reassurance. My approach is warm and personalized with the intent to meet every student where they are while helping them make incremental progress and build on their successes. Students learn how to honestly identify their challenges and then are given research-based guidance on strategies to address how to change their behaviors to optimize their productivity. Students learn about how their brains process, learn and recall information and the science behind what drives their behavior. Common issues include motivation, procrastination, time management, stress management,  executive functioning issues, and general wellness (sleep, screens, nutrition and exercise).

Parents play a critical role in their child’s personal and academic well-being. I share my expertise in child development with parents to address the complexities of parenting today. Parents often feel like they are over-involved in their child’s academics but fear the consequences if they don’t monitor and intervene. I want to help parents strike a balance through skill development and strategies that offer new approaches to navigating the ever-changing parent-child relationship.

​For those of you interested in my background, I have a master’s degree in school psychology and a doctorate in child and developmental psychology. I have over 20 years of experience working with children, teenagers and young adults in both public and private school settings, from preschool through college.  For the past several years I have taught college-level psychology courses. I am committed to identifying the root causes of issues that may be holding students back, and customizing strategies to achieve success—with an emphasis on physical and mental wellness, and how their parents can provide the support necessary.
